I know some of you are SM players and I am still on my way to buying models and forming an army.

Was wondering if anyone fancied passing critique on a possible list.

I'm going for an all rounder type army and will look to buy other units to make a more assault based and a more defensive based army too but this is the "core"

I will be using Iron Hands chapter tactics. (6+fnp and "it will not die")

One little bit of feedback - strong short range, punchy list however flyers will cause you an issue.

yep flyers cause most of us issues unless you plan for them, which is why I hate them so much its a dynamic the game was never designed for.

your command squad is too expensive for 5 guys in power armour they will die on mass to lots of small arms and people will just avoid hitting them with high ap weapons.

your tac guys need a role. plasma and melta gives them options but no purpose. you would be better off with one or 2 squads with multi meltas and meltas for anti tank and one squad with a plasma and either missile launcher or plasma cannon for infantry hunting or light vehicle kills.

5 man assault squads just don't pack enough of a punch to be worth taking, by the time you have killed 2 they have no impact on the charge or shooting and are not scoring so are largely irrelevant. you would be better off taking a bigger bike squad to help your hq get to the fight and they are much more shooty and speedy.

a secondary hq should have a purpose too, librarian or chaplain adds some unit support or powers, captain adds nothing much.

not every squad needs a rhino especially if you take a shooty tac squad so spend those points elsewhere and defo take dozer blades, 5 points is the difference between your plan working or you blocking your other rhinos(Jamie) or even just failing a rush just when you need it.

I would drop the land raider and take the anti air tank or a predator and and aegis line with quad gun, this will give you more chance against high armour tanks and flyers.

Ok ... So am I right in thinking that my chapter master doesn't have to stay with an honour guard if I was to field them? ... Meaning I could chuck them into a land raider and they could go all choppy for me while he rides off with a biker gang?

better but I still wouldn't bother with the storm shield on the command squad as most things that hit them they will get a normal save against and anything else you can use cover to your advantage and you get jink saves on bikes.

the devastator squads really don't need rhinos, most people buy razorbacks just to get the extra heavy weapon in cheap and I would try and theme them again so your heavy weapons do a job, either anti tank or anti infantry, plasma and missiles can do a bit of both and are great vs light vehicles but as soon as you chuck heavy bolters in you make them an anti infantry squad which your army already has a lot of. the plus side with marines in you can combat squad but this reduces the number of wounds the unit can take before you lose your big guns and in killpoint missions is not advisable so you may end up wasting points in weapons that wont be shooting as much.

including the flyer is good option but it is a fragile one and sometimes the worst answer other than no anti air is to take another flyer as if yours comes on first then it will be shot down by theirs. aegis with quad is cheaper or a stormraven is more durable and can easily take out 2 flyers a turn itself with the machine spirit.

hq choices are better but don't go plasma pistol on a guy who can also wound himself with perils of the warp. find some points to make him mastery level 2 and stick him on a bike with your warlord and command or give him his own squad as with the bike hes harder to kill and you can get him where he will be most effective for his powers and give him a force staff to hunt monsters and still be able to hurt a tank.

That looks like a nice list, but if I were to thrown in my two cents...

Devastator squads : I would question the need for rhinos with them as you ideally want them shooting from turn one. They have good range and offer a decent chance of getting first blood if you get first turn. If they are in a rhino they will have a bit of protection but wont be nearly as effective (and not forgetting they will snap-firing when they dismount).  I would also consider having the same type of weapon in a squad i.e. 4 plasma cannons or 4 lascannons.  This helps to give them a defined role on the battle field (my fav is 4 missile launchers as you can give them flak rockets if you think you might face multiple fliers!).

Biker units: This is more of a personal choice but I would consider dropping the attack bike and put in 2 special weapons, probably grav guns. This still gives them use against vehicles by immobilizing them but it makes monsterous creatures want to run away Smile

Chapter Master: Loving the load out on him! Part of me wonders whether having a captain on a bike instead would be of greater utility on the battle field as he will make your bike units into troop choices. But I think you have a fair number of troops anyway, more if they combat squad, so this is more of something to bare in mind for those objective based games.

Anywho, just my views so feel free to tell me I am a stupid smelly Imperial Fist player :p

Here's my 2 cents, but bare in mind I play an Imperial Fists Successor....

I would throw the Librarian on a bike, add a mastery level and the Command Squad. The Command Squad should lose the storm shields, the points would be better off adding an Apothecary (as FnP saves are the only saves permitted against Perils of the Warp) and having 4 special weapons, I would go with Grav weapons personally.

As for Tactical Squad Sergeants, I have found they work better with Combi-weapons rather then CC weapons - theyre not killy enough or have special rules (such as Chaos Marine Champions) so I load them up with a Combi-weapon that supports the Special weapon of the squad and either a Lightning Claw or Power Fist.

Also, I would drop the Stormtalon and go for an Aegis Defence Line with a Quad Gun - it provides better air support, cheaper, and is also a 4+ Fortification (plus I always put a Devastator Squad controlling it as they provide it with the Tank Hunter USR). Speaking of Devastators, I would give them weapons that are either anti-infantry or anti-tank, with your loadouts of your tactical and bike squads I would go anti-tank with 4 Lascannons and drop the Rhinos with them.

I do see what is being said about the sergeants ... But I have 5 models that are just so lovely with lovely power weapons (thanks to novelty boy) that I want to use as my sergeants ... I most likely will buy another set of vets to paint up and switch out Smile

Also I have a librarian I made as well who won't fit on a bike ... So for now I'll keep him on foot (I will happily accept "I told you so" when he dies ... But hopefully he won't)

Made some changes again ... Just wanted to know can my command squad act freely? Or are they tied to the lib? Can my chapter master join them?

Better but few things. Power weapons in devastator sarges is waste of points. Even if its on model dont pay for it just tell you opponent.

Any independent character can join your command squad they are just another squad really but an apothecary is good idea even if it came from jason and his confused blood angels.

Take your command squad off bikes, stick them in a razorback with your librarian. Ignore everyone here a stick with a storm talon (but also get an aegis defence line). The storm talons are a real pain the the arse and hits in bs5 with strafing run. Great to get rid of an annoying dreadnought/light tank or to target a tougher infantry squad or character.

I'm thinking of putting my chapter master in along side lib in the command squad. I will put an apothecary into the cmd squad when I can find a narthecium arm.

Managed to pull the arms off the models I have already so will equip them with combis

I would drop the digi weapons on librarian and give bike sarges melta bombs as it opens up more av14 anti tank options on your front line troops.

While I hate flyers I think flak missiles are waste of points as unless your opponent brings flyers they are a waste, at least the quad can shoot troops. As a take all comers list though its good as you have options.

Curious how your chapter master would fare in battle as only 10pts less than abadon hes quite pricey.

that's actually a good call on the digi weapons,

and my CM well

I'm hoping he will be pretty beastly at toughness 5 with a 2+/4+ with 4 wounds and a chance to regain those wounds end of every turn (it will not die 5 or 6 regen 1 wound from iron hands chapter tactics)
with then a 6+ FNP plus eternal warrior from shield eternal means no instant death

then on the attack 4(5) S7 attacks at AP3 (not amazing but pretty good) attacking at I5

plus did I mention he looks cool?

A few minor thoughts (take or leave it, as it's been a long while since my marines have been fielded).

- Might as well change one of the power weapons for an upgrade to company champion (which is same cost, but also gives a combat shield, WS5 and honour or death rule). I also think switching one of the weapons for a power axe or fist to deal with 2+ save units would also be useful.

Not sure the combi weapons would be too useful on the sergeants. The devastators should be ideally shooting at things from the other end of the board, with the sergeant forgoing his shooting to give BS5 to one of the heavy weapons. I'd rather look at swapping those for an extra special weapon in each of the bike squads (who will certainly make use of them).

My other main thought is regarding the chapter itself. Is there a particular reason you've chosen an Iron Hands successor chapter?(e.g. love of Iron Hands lore). I'm asking simply because their chapter tactics favours techmarines/masters of the forge, vehicles and characters. Were as, the white scars chapter tactics might be more favourable to your love of bikes and mobile power armour units.

Losing the combis on the devs makes sense ... And I only went iron hands because of the 6+FNP

But I would get loads more utility out of the white scars CT

kind of just went with the idea of getting somewhere fast and holding it (this making my bikes troops and there for scoring)

But you all talk a lot of sense ...

Still only 2 tac squads 2 Dev squads 16 bikes 2 rhinos and a converted bike command squad to buy build and paint and I can start play testing Smile

Kind of why I went with them ... My eldar have to be pretty focused and one job

On a side note ... Can anyone teach me in person how to apply transfers?
