A Tale of Some Gamers... Empty
PostSubject: A Tale of Some Gamers...   A Tale of Some Gamers... EmptyMon Jul 07, 2014 10:42 am

So I'm thinking about painting a new army, and as my hobby workrate has nose-dived dramatically in the last 18 months, I'm looking for something to help keep me motivated and painting. A Tale of Some Gamers has always worked in the past. I'm thinking of sticking to one game system, 40k, as I have always done Tales on 40k and have never been able to translate my Tale Rules across into fantasy nearly as well (paint 100 skavenslaves, you've painted 200 points or so... one High Elf Lord on Dragon, 750 done. You rarely find such vast gulfs of points in 40k, Superheavies recent addition to the game being an exception)

Anyway, before I go into the rules I run and the timing of the event and when it would start etc... who is potentially interested? Oh, and my ruleset is designed for fresh armies, but we can easily adapt it for adding points to an already painted army... but the target is to paint 2000 points over the course of the challenge, so if you only have 500 points left to paint of the army you're currently working on and are interested in taking part, either make plans for a larger army or start plotting what your NEXT army will be... And yes, you know as well as I that those are the ONLY two options we possess, deciding we have quite an adequate amount of toy soldiers and Games Workshop won't be taking any more of our money is an idea only the deeply naïve even consider any more... Razz

So anyway, who is potentially interested?

I am interested, I dont have motivation at the best of times. I could easily put together a 2000 point unpainted force.

I would be up for it as long as its a bit more relaxed than some that weve done in the past. with 2 children and a 3rd on the way and new job, (im working 14 hours on my first day) time isn't my ally. that said I am investing in my chaos and that includes 2 super heavies and more daemons so I can defo cover the points.

Rich the Tale army list I've drawn up is worth 131 points by my old painting points system... which is about what I managed to do last YEAR. So if I can do the army in less than a year, it'll be a step in the right direction (given I used to do about 500 points a year)

The two tales we've done in the past were over 4 months and over 8 months. You won the sprint, you and I being the only ones of the 4 to make all the deadlines, you winning on the gaming side of things. Despite my Orks repeatedly kicking Beeswax (or whatever his name was) in the face. I won the longer event, though I only just made the deadlines sometimes given it was my Star Wars Guard army and painting that much infantry was a bit of a fucker. There were 8 gamers in that one, though I can't recall how many made all the deadlines. Looking at the final score, it looks like half the field again.

Anyway, as you said, you're getting super heavies... that is a months painting allotment straight away, on a single vehicle. And if I give you two months to build and paint the thing, that shouldn't be too much of a crimp in your time...

Have a think then Jamie, doubt I'll be starting for at least a few weeks while I judge the interest, explain the rules, agree the timescale... write a few 2k lists and see which one you want to work towards most.

For what it's worth, I tend to think a minimum of four is required for this kind of thing, and we're already past that threshold so I'd say it's almost certain to go ahead... just details now...

Rules for the Tale

I have just copied and pasted rules from a previous Tale here, I have gone through and tried to correct any discrepancies (changing Mondays to Tuesdays being the starter for ten) and with the release of 7th edition I have pretty much just chopped out the whole apoc rules section (last time I had a whole raft of rules to bring 3rd ed apoc up to 5th edition working) until closer to the event itself. But the points on offer and the timescales will work for us. This gives 2 calendar months, so sometimes 8 weeks sometimes 9. You should be able to paint 500 points in that, I hope...

Tale of X Gamers (X - To Be Determined)

Starts Tuesday 29th July
Phase 1 lasts till last Tuesday of September
Phase 2 lasts till last Tuesday of November
Phase 3 lasts till last Tuesday of January 2015
Phase 4 lasts till last Tuesday of March 2015
Phase 5 will last an as yet undetermined time...

Expanding an Army

The rules were originally designed for painting an army fresh, however some people would prefer to expand existing armies, so to allow for that...

At the start of each period each person must submit a list of what they wish to paint, coming to 500 points. This is what they will paint, in order to score that month. If they then wish to substitute out that model for other models in order to play a game for the bonus points (no super heavies in combat patrol Rich!) they are allowed to do so. Anything that is dropped out is held in reserve for the apoc game at the end. Thus if you already have a 2k painted army and wish to just add more stuff to it, you can paint whatever you want, just swap it to the apoc reserve and bring in your already painted troopers for any games we play.

Once swapped in the models you bring in stay in your army - thus whatever you bring for the combat patrol game will be part of the 1000 point game and the 1500 point tournament. This is to try to keep a level playing field between those who have a large already painted army behind them and those who are starting fresh.

The phases are detailed below.

Phase 1 - 500 points. 5 points for on time, 3 for late (painted by first Tuesday of October) , 0 for unpainted. Bonus 1 point available for getting a combat patrol game in. (not necessarily a ToXG competitor, anyone will do.)

Phase 2 - 500 points. 5 points for on time, 3 for late (painted by first Tuesday of December), 0 for unpainted. Bonus 3 points available for getting a test game against someone (not necessarily a ToFG competitor, anyone will do.)

Phase 3 - 500 points. 5 points for on time, 3 for late (painted by first Tuesday of February), 0 for unpainted. Also, will play a mini-league with each competitor playing each other competitor. League rankings will determine bonus points. This will take place early February (date TBD) I have yet to determine if we will do it over one Sunday or perhaps over a couple of Tuesdays.

Phase 4 - 500 points. 5 points for on time, 3 points for late (painted by first Tuesday of April), 0 for unpainted. Bonus 2 points for modelling an objective marker. Further bonus 1 point for a further objective marker.

Phase 5 - As much extra as you wish for Apoc. Legendary Units, Super Heavies, whatever you like. Deadline is the day of the apoc game, probably late April or early May(date TBD). There will be no points available for painting, but simply put if it isn't painted you can't use it. Any units dropped from earlier 500 point blocks can be put back in here. All forces will join our standing 2000 point armies. The sides will be determined by the challenge organiser along the best lines he sees fit. Hopefully we’ll have some clear “goodies” and “baddies” that can team up, neutrals being assigned as needed... however if there are no clear easy sides to draw we will find another method, at random if necessary. Any difference in points will be covered by additional strategic assets for the poorer party. Scoring for this month will be 5 points for each person on the winning team. There will be an additional 5 points for the "Champion" of each team. This will be decided by completing a secret personal objective (so secret even their team mates aren't allowed to know!)

Additional Rules and Clarifications

The 500 points is the target. Give or take a few points that can be made up or dropped with wargear this is fine. Of course, in your test games you must have a legal army and the correct army value so bear that in mind when planning your forces. Your 1500 point army for the mini tournament will be made up of what you have painted thus far. *With Unbound now a thing, this is less of an issue*

If anyone chooses to paint extra throughout the challenge that is their prerogative. However you can’t hold it off against next month. If you present 650 points in phase 1 you still have to present 500 in phase 2. The advantages for doing extra are more tactical flexibility when planning for the phase 3 tournament and more forces ready for the final apocalypse game.

Imperial armour books are acceptable sources for miniatures, unit entries and army lists. Anything found within those pages shall be allowed to be entered as part of the contest and used in games therein (though obviously apoc only formations can’t be used till the apoc game) The person wishing to do this however MUST possess (or have access to) the Imperial Armour books required.

When it comes to games, weapons on models and anything that would normally be represented needs to be. Wargear that doesn't need to be represented can be varied.

If you go to the effort of making your weapons alterable, through magnets or whatever, you can make use of this flexibility. The conversion work and painting the extra guns is the price you pay. Note though that in the mini tournament you must stick to one weapon loadout throughout.

Finally, while wargear can be changed, when it comes to the mini tournament we will each submit a list. That is what we play to for ALL games.

Apocalyptic Finale

To finish our Tale of X Gamers we're having an apocalyptic showdown, and I thought I'd give fair warning ofsome rules we are using for this one.

For starters, all models MUST be painted. It is a painting challenge we've just finished after all. It doesn't matter when you painted them, or whether you're missing something you should have finished earlier, if it's painted you can use it, if it isn't then it doesn't exist as far as we're concerned.

The basic rules will be for a standard apoc game, though we will have personal missions. These will be written in advance and will be secret (even from our teammates) Revealing the mission before the end of the game means your mission is void. You will have the choice of three.

Claim most objectives in the enemy deployment zone.
Kill the highest value enemy independant character.
Destroy the highest value enemy legendary formation.

In the kill/destroy ones, the person who takes the last wound takes the prize, as keeping track of who did what damage is far too much work. If both players on a team complete their mission, whoever did the harder mission is named that sides champion.

The winning team will get 5 points each. The champion of each team will get 5 points each. Thus each player can score 0, 5, or 10. Only one player will score 10.

If you have something undercoated but no paint has been near it since that undercoat, would that count as unpainted.

Oh yeah, sorry forgot to mention that. Painting means with a brush, therefore anything you do with a spray classes as preparation and therefore is fine. Technically this means someone could airbrush a tank brigade bar the details, and the details would be their challenge... if someone really wants to do that it seems a waste of the challenge to me but that is fine by me. On a more practical note, if someone wanted to airbrush a camo scheme onto their vehicles, I can understand them wanting to do it as a batch to maintain consistency. They can then chuck a tank or two into each months painting allotment as they go, finishing them off when required, to meet their target for that month.

For example, I want to try out the salt weathering technique, therefore will be spraying a couple of layers onto my vehicles and I plan to do them all as a batch. I won't paint them all in the same month though. Though to be fair I'll still have quite a bit to do after those two spray layers, I'll have to do a few more layers on the vehicles basic colour (yellow!) for starters, let alone details, but the principle still stands...

PostSubject: Re: A Tale of Some Gamers...   A Tale of Some Gamers... EmptySun Jul 20, 2014 9:38 pm

Ok guys we're not far from when I'm gonna kick this off, here's who we've got so far...

Ginge - Orks
Rich H - more chaos?
Ian - Guard?
Ron
Jamie - guard?
Rob - Space Wolves
Neil - Chaos Space Marines
And my mate Ken might take part in the painting challenge, though he'd be a peripheral member as he wouldn't be able to join in with so many of the group games, but as a member of each Tale I've run thus far I always extend the invitation.

Any others interested in taking part? I'll be talking about this at the club this week, if you have any questions ask.

We officially start on the 29th, which means by that date I will need from each of you the following;

What army you are doing for the Tale. Obviously with unbound you can field whatever you like, cherry pick allies from here and there, but I want a decision on what your main force is SUPPOSED to be.

What your first 500 points will be.

Obviously there is a bonus point available in period 1 for playing a combat patrol game, so if your first 500 points to paint is a legal combat patrol force (n0 2+ saves, no 3 or more wound models, no more than armour 33 combining FSR of a vehicle, no ordnance) then you have more points available to you. Obviously the rules for substitution are in, so you can paint a Baneblade if you wish, then drop that to the bench until the apoc finale and field a 500 point combat patrol force that you have already painted.

And that's it really. Just two things. Which army, and (roughly) 500 points you plan to paint over the next two months.

Oz, strip and repaint is fine. As far as the challenge is concerned, it's you painting the models, not what condition they're in before you basecoat them.

Therefore, if anyone asks, yes you are allowed to airbrush if this suits you, and if you want to batch paint a base colour to maintain consistency, I have no problem with that either. We consider anything sprayed to be mere prep work that can be done at any time. It's when you pick up a brush that we consider you start to "paint" the model. So for myself I may well spray all my vehicles a base colour of yellow, but I don't officially start painting them until the month I say "I'm painting a battlewagon" and start painting tracks and guns and whatnot.

And Alan, that's fine, I have a friend who is in a similar boat to you (lives up near Milton Keynes) and he usually takes part in it when I run a Tale as a simple motivational tool to increase his hobby output. From the basis of this challenge, there will be 23 points available for painting models, and a possible 18 for gaming... though that 18 is only available to one player, if they take part in the voluntary little games, WIN the mini tournament, are on the winning apoc team AND the champion of that team. I would expect most participants gaming scores to be less than 10, and that most points will be on the painting side of the challenge - which is kinda the point. What we'll do for you is you submit a list of what you want to paint and then on or before deadline day email me some pictures to show that your models are painted. They don't have to be the best quality pictures, it's just to show that the model now has paint on it really.

And if you can both submit your lists for your first 500 points either here or to me at the club I'd appreciate it. Ideally by Tuesday, but as my friend Ken is in the middle of moving house right now and his army books are packed away I've said he can have a little longer to come up with his list... it's just eating into his painting time at the end of the day so no harm to the rest of us. So in the interests of fairness, the first list can be a little late... This last bit applies to everyone actually...

Please add me to the list (motivation to add more to the nids, even if I still end up painting horrendously slow).
First 500:

3 biovores (120)
9 spore mines (45)
3 tyrant guard (lash whip+bonesword, crushing claws) 190
4 tyranid warriors (barbed strangler, 1 with twin boneswords, rest with rending claws 160

I have an idea what I want to add to one 500 point block *_*
