formations and detachments??? Empty
PostSubject: formations and detachments???   formations and detachments??? EmptyFri May 08, 2015 1:34 am

SOooooooo....... I''ve got into an interesting conversation on one of the facebook groups for 40k and i thought i'd pose the same question here to see what response you guys give.

looking the two formations within the Ed7 rule book (p120) it outlines both the combined arms detachment (standard 1 HQ, 2 troop choice) and the Allied Formation (1HQ and 1 Troop choice) allow you to gain the 'objective secured' special rule.

If you do not run either of these formations then you do not benefit form this ruling and it reverts back to the controlling objective markers on page 134 where you only hold an objective marker if it is contested.

So what if you have a troop choice as part of a formation? That formation is not part of the detachment as it is classifed as a completely seperate detachment so does not benefit from Objective secured.

This came about as the Skitarii do not have a HQ choice so therefore cannot benefit from being a Allied formation, they run a diffeering formation called the Skitarii Municiple (which gives them scout and crusader) however as the rangers and vanguard are troop choices could they ever get objective secured.

I came to the conclusion that they can't but i'd be keen to hear your opinions?

I believe if you are taking a "legal" formation/detachment from the book (most of the new ones have unique ones like the necrons/daemonkin) then that gives them the rule.

If your taking models outside the formation, then you'd be playing an unbound list so would lose the rule as a whole and it would revert back.

The conversation on Facebook conflicts with your opinion rich. Only the combined arms detachment and the allies detachment, as per the rules on p120 deliver objective secure. All other formations and detachments (unless clearly specified) do not.

Objective secure is purely for a CAD. Its that way to show the strength of it vs the mismatch that can be formations. Some units and armies just don't have the tactical prowess of others clearly.

I believe Obj Sec is the benefit for running CAD and possibly a small alliance that broadly follows the same basic outlay as a CAD. Once you start putting formations in that have different unit restrictions and special abilities, well they're good enough on their own. Obj Sec is the reward for taking a more balanced force rather than the specialist list other formations provide.
