| For the last few years, I have travelled to Bracknell to take part in a combat patrol doubles tournament with a friend. It's halfway between where he lives and where I live, so a decent spot to meet up for a day of geeking. For said tournaments I tend to do weird wacky armies, such as my Imperial Guard Aliens Colonial Marines and Ripley (with friends) through my Halo Marines and on to my Battlestar Galactica Eldar... and what was going to be a Pirates vs Ninjas Dark Eldar force until a rule tweak ruined my plans.
Anyway, one of the things I personally enjoy is the fact that it is a small army to build if you DO want to do something different, to a weird theme. But of course if you aren't as crazy as me, you don't have to.
I am considering running a similar sort of event here. Though given how people struggle to make it down on the occassions we have the room on a Sunday, I am thinking we may get more interest and participants if we do it over several Mondays (like It's a Knockout) as opposed to all in one day.
I see several benefits to running this: The small scale means the new members who have just started the hobby can take part too. The team dynamic will hopefully form some partnerships and create some interesting stuff. It's small enough that if anyone wants to do a special hobby project, they reasonably can... but of course no one has to. Combat Patrol is fairly hard to break - the most douchey stuff is kept out by the scale and the CP rules* It gives Paul an excuse to make a trophy again
*please note that this is NOT a guarantee... MOST of the douchey stuff is kept out, but there's always a way round everything...
I was thinking that the prize for this one may be something a little different... I was thinking the winning team will have their entry paid for the next Combat Patrol doubles tournament at Bracknell, as a sort of Club Representative to their competition. I will be going anyway, so therefore I will not take part in this contest and will merely referee. If someone is stuck I could maybe step in as a wildcard player, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. It'd only be the entry, the club can't pay your travel and whatnot, and if the winner can't go we can offer it to the runner up or something. But I thought it may be interesting for you all... some of you may have been to tournaments in the past, others may not. Generally Bracknell is a fairly soft place to go for tournaments in my experience. It's more friendly tournament than cheesey tournament.
Anyway, a quick reminder of Combat Patrol Rules
500 points FOC 0-1 HQ 0-2 Elite 1-4 Troop 0-2 Fast Attack 0-1 Heavy Support No vehicles with total armour (Front, Side and Rear) of more than 33 No 2+ saves No 3 wound models without the swarm special rule No Ordnance
The allies matrix they had at the last event was slightly different from the one in the 40k rulebook... mainly in that Tyranids could have allies. They were assumed to be slaves to the Hivemind so had LD10 and I1. Used to be the same for Necrons back in the day though that may be updated, i'll confirm on that one.
At the last CP doubles event they also introduced a rule (much to my chagrin) saying only one vehicle of 3HP in the entire 1000 point combined force. I didn't like this rule and will NOT be enforcing it on my event if I run one. However if anyone who enters with an eye on the main prize wants to use the same army for both events, it's something to bear in mind when designing your force.
So... is there much interest in this? This isn't an immediate start project, I want to give some warning for those who do wish to have a crack at building a force from scratch for it...

| So, good response so far... looking like Rob, Ron, Rich H, Rich F, and just to break up the alliteration, Ian.
I'd need a minimum of 10 to run this I reckon, as that would be the minimum required to have everybody play 4 games. I'm thinking we could squeaze two games in on a Monday given they'd be smaller games... so do the event across a couple of Mondays so it is open to as many people as possible (I know not everyone can make our occasional weekend games)
Anyone else likely to be up for it who hasn't seen the forum yet? I'm imagining Neil and Paul will be interested... I'll have to put some notes together and start signing up those who don't read the forums...

| Right, an updated list of interested parties...
Rich H Rich F Ron - Paul WB Rob Dale Ian Jason Jamie Neil? Scott? Rich A?
If all of the above are confirmed then I definitely have enough teams to run this, so we are a go. I shall run it early December. I can't make it down this Monday but I shall try to at some point bring some of my previous combat patrol forces down in case it gives someone some inspiration.
In the meantime, have a chat amongst yourselves and sort out who is teaming up with who. I know Ron and Paul are working together, and I can take a guess at some of the other pairings... but that's not for me to say. If we can sort out definite teams in the next couple weeks I can work out how many games we need to play and how many weeks we need to spread the event over - I think two Mondays should suffice, assuming we can get through two 1000 point a side games per week. The sooner I know the teams, the sooner I can give you guys dates.
Anyway, I'm back online now, and while I shall sadly miss club this week I will be available here for any questions.

| Nothing wrong with a guard army, they do quite well in combat patrol. Sure, you can't use heavy tanks... but Chimeras are awesome and cheap. Combat patrol prevents monsters, terminators, super hard characters... none of which guard are known for | |
